Olive Oil Extract | Squalene

Squalene is the active extract of olive oil, the fat obtained from the fruit of European olive tree (Olea europaea).
Olive oil has a long history of being used as a home remedy for skincare.  Ancient Egyptians used it alongside beeswax as a cleanser, moisturiser, and antibacterial agent.  In ancient Greece, the substance was used during massage to prevent sports injuries, relieve muscle fatigue, and eliminate lactic acid buildup.
Scientific studies have noted the abundance of squalene in olive oil aids in the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis, acne, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis.  Squalene is used as an antioxidant, moisturiser, and as a convenient vehicle to carry other substances in topical application.
There are also studies that demonstrate olive oil in combination with honey and beeswax alleviates diaper dermatitis, psoriasis, and eczema by inhibiting the growth of bacterias such as Staphylococcus aureus andCandida albicans.  Olive oil is popularly used as a safe alternative to mineral oils and other plant-derived oils such as those from sunflower, grapeseed and coconut in the massaging of infants and toddlers; clinical trials have shown also that olive oil lowers the risk of dermatitis for infants in all gestational stages when compared with emollient cream.
Squalene is also found to reduce inflammation via oleuropein (the active extract of the olive leaf), which is touted for its antioxidant, anti-atherosclerotic, and anti-inflammatory characteristics.
Due to the many obvious medicinal benefits of olive oil, LIVING PROOF utilises squalene in the Multi-Action Cell Treatment Toner, as a gentle but exceedingly effective substitute to harsh alcohols and synthetic solvents; the olive oil extract cleanses without undesirable greasiness, cleansing so well that it even removes ballpoint pen marks.
