Kushenin and matrine are major enzymes found in the root extract of the Ku Shen plant (Sophora flavescens).

Ku Shen is a species of plant that are widely distributed in Asia, Oceania, and the Pacific islands.  It has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicines and is commonly used for the treatment of viral hepatitis, enteritis, cancer, viral myocarditis, gastrointestinal haemorrhage and skin diseases and inflammations such as vaginitis, psoriasis and eczema.

Matrine has displayed anti-cancer activity in clinical trials; it has also shown to promote hair growth.  Furthermore, Sophorae injections may reduce the toxicity and adverse effects caused by chemotherapy.  Ku Shen extract is also being explored as a promising source of natural, novel, new antifoulant (i.e. an agent to be mixed into paint to prevent or reduce fouling).

Sophora root extracts make skin a naturally whiter colour and is a mild whitening agents for UV-sensitive skin.
