Witch Hazel Extract | Astringent

Witch-hazel is an astringent extracted from the leaves and bark of the North American witch-hazel shrub (Hamamelis virginiana).
This plant extract was widely used for medicinal purposes by Native Americans to treat swellings, inflammations and tumours. Early Puritan settlers in New England adopted this remedy from the natives, and its use became widely established in the United States since.
Witch-hazel is mainly used externally on sores, bruises, and swelling, and is also effective as an astringent and anti-oxidant useful in fighting acne. It is often also used as a natural remedy for psoriasis and eczema, and to prevent facial swelling and cracked, blistered skin. The extract is also used for treating insect bites, poison ivy, and haemorrhoids.
Some evidence suggest positive results in treating diarrhoea, general infections such as colds, as well as eye inflammations, bruising, and varicose veins. It is sometimes given to women to reduce swelling and soothe wounds resulting from childbirth.
Witch-hazel extract can be found in LIVING PROOF’s Multi-Action Cell Treatment Toner.
